Chicago and Illinois Insurance Requirements

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

Insurance coverage for your car in Chicago and moreover the state of Illinois is mandatory.  To be within the legal limits of coverage, must carry insurance at a minimum of vehicle liability in the following amounts:

  • $20,000 – injury or death of one person in an accident
  • $40,000 – injury or death of more than one person in an accident
  • $15,000 – damage to property of another person

Your insurance card must be carried with you at all times – and you must always have with you your most current card, readily available in the event law enforcement officers request proof of insurance.

Your should also realize that your signature on your vehicle registration renewal application affirms that your vehicle is properly covered.  It is possible that you could be randomly selected by computer, to receive a questionnaire asking for the name of your insurance company and policy number.  Your responses are verified, and if you do not have insurance or fail to return the questionnaire with the requested information, your license plates are suspended.

In the state of Illinois and the city of Chicago, if you are stopped for a traffic violation or involved in an accident, a law enforcement officer may issue a traffic citation if you are unable to provide evidence of insurance.  This could subject you to the following fines:

* minimum $500 fine for driving uninsured

* minimum $1,000 fine for driving a vehicle while the license plates are suspended for a previous insurance violation
